The Role of Hand Sketching and Digital Drawing in the Design Process
Amy Roehl, Albert Marichal, August 2017
Only a few decades ago all drawings in the design process were completed by hand. From initial design concept through perspective presentation drawings and on to technical drawings for construction documentation, hand skills including freehand sketching to technical drafting were essential to a designer’s toolkit. Professional practice began to embrace digital drafting programs in the 1980s, shunned by some who protested that the computer could never take the place of hand drawings. Today both hand and digital drawing skills are essential tools for use to ideate, present and sell ideas to the client, and complete accurate construction documents. This video will compare and contrast two tools in professional practice by examining the use of hand sketching and digital drawing in the design process.

In the video, interior designers in professional practice will:
A) Be interviewed about how they use hand sketching and digital drawing in their processes.
B) Demonstrate the use of both media in their practice
