| End of Term Goodbye
from Eric Wiedegreen |
As my term as IDEC President comes to a close, I would like to thank all of you for the honor of being able to represent IDEC these past 16 months. As a group we have accomplished a great deal. I look forward as Past-President to working with our 2007-2008 President Jane Kucko and an excellent Board of Directors. One of my primary duties as Past-President is to act as the head of the nominating committee. IDEC headquarters will be sending a call for nominations (and I would encourage you to self nominate yourself for one of the offices up for election.) We have put together a nominating committee composed of a representative from each IDEC region that will help create the proposed slate.

I will not minimize the amount of work required as President (it IS in fact a LOT!) but the organization has a careful mentoring system in place and superb help from our paid staff. I hope each of you would one day aspire to serve as the IDEC President. The traditional route from say network chair, to regional conference coordinator, to regional chair, to board member to president, gives a member excellent experiences in leadership.
The perks involved in the presidency (other than the "honor" of serving and the experience to be engaged with the leaders of other design organizations ASID, IIDA, IDC, etc.) are few but DO exist. This past February I had the privilege to represent IDEC at a mosaics workshop in Venice, Italy.
Orsoni Smalti Veneziani hosted the presidents of ASID, IIDA and IDEC for a week-long workshop. Orsoni mosaics can be admired in the furthest corners of the earth: from Westminster Abbey in London to the gilded domes and the Buddhas in Bangkok, from kings' palaces in Saudi Arabia to the artistic and religious works in Budapest, from the pagoda of the Grand Palace of the Royal Family in Thailand, to the Bund 18 in Shanghai. The glass and gold leaf mosaic material is made right on site, and I even had the opportunity to try my hand (rather unsuccessfully!) with the molten glass. We were able to experience a run of gold leaf mosaic material for some restoration work at St. Peter's Basilica that had to be fabricated in the same way as that manufactured in the Renaissance. We had private tours of the San Marcos Basilica and went one day to Vicenza to tour the new TREND Europe headquarters (in a restored villa.)

This opportunity allowed me to really get to know Suzan Globus (current ASID president) and Lewis Goetz (past IIDA president.) My finished mosaic piece represented a huge amount of work, but I am very proud of the results. The workshop is open to anyone during the year. The housing on site (Domus Orsoni) is spectacular. I would encourage anyone interested in this art form, or someone truly in love with Venice (as I am!) to investigate the possibilities at www.orsoni.com and also to see the wonders of the tile and glass materials available from TREND (www.stonesource.com/trend.html).
With this one-time perk in mind keep those options open to run for a vacant IDEC office. The full year-end report will be made available electronically toward the end of April. Our organization appears to be in excellent shape. Wishing you a good summer,

Eric Wiedegreen
2006-2007 IDEC President

There are many opportunities popping up for IDEC members at this year's NEOCON. A few of our members will be presenting workshops & InterfaceFLOR will be sponsoring an IDEC reception on Monday night, June 11th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. | New ASID Publication |
"Interior design is on its way to becoming a recognized profession, but it still has several steps to complete," states Caren Martin, Ph.D., CID, ASID, IIDA, IDEC, an assistant professor of interior design at the University of Minnesota and author of a new ASID publication, Interior Design: From Practice to Profession. Martin describes the common characteristics of a profession and traces the path to professionalism taken by such practices as law, medicine and engineering. She then examines the history of architectural, interior decoration and interior design practice, explaining the steps each has taken or not taken to establish the practice as a profession. This is a "must read" for anyone interested in interior design legislation, education and the public's perception of interior design practice. Printed copies are available at a cost of $18 for ASID members or $23 for non-members, plus $1.50 shipping. Faculty who are interested in the discounted rate or would like to purchase multiple copies can contact Michael Berens, Director of Research & Knowledge Resources for ASID at mberens@asid.org or (202) 675-2362.
