PRESS RELEASE
The results from the first annual Interior Design Student Make a Difference Project are in! This project sponsored by the Interior Design Educators Council Social Justice Network engaged students in seeking out a local challenge that design could help resolve. Students then devised a design solution, installed it, and observed users' use of the idea—all in 36 hours. They lastly photo documented their installation and submitted a summary of their project to the Social Justice Network. The many inspired entries include a convertible cart for the homeless, a graphic system to encourage bike commuting, and a public bench addition to allow one to rest a drink. Other student teams created public writing boards for venting opinions, recycling campaigns, and art systems that encouraged passersby to appreciate an exterior view. Each demonstrates students’ unique problem seeking abilities and use of design to make a small but meaningful difference in peoples’ lives. All solutions will be displayed at the 2008 International IDEC Conference in Montreal. Plans are also underway to make the projects available for review from the IDEC website. The Social Justice Network is making plans to offer the project again in fall 2008 with the intent of enticing even more instructors, institutions and students to participate, spreading the make a difference influence even further.
