VOTE – Election of Board of Director Officers

This years’ IDEC vote is going as green as legally allowable.  In the coming days, members of IDEC with the “Professional Designation” will receive both an email and a paper ballot in the mail.  The email will have a document with all of the biographical information of each candidate as well as a copy of the actual ballot that you can print off and fax back to the main office.  Due to legal issues, a paper copy of the ballot will also be sent through the postal system that will serve as notification of the election and provide you with an opportunity to vote.  Recent typical voting patterns for Board of Directors elections have rendered less than a 20% Professional Member participation. Please let your voice be heard through this vote.

EVERYONE HAS A STORY

In a continuing effort to further the concept of design education, IDEC would like to assemble a series of short statements (no more than 2-3 paragraphs) on “Why I became a Design Educator”.  Everyone has a slightly unique story and we would like to have narratives from seasoned educators, educators new to academia, adjunct instructors, those ready to retire, grad students entering design education, etc.  There are clearly benefits to being an educator and we need to herald these benefits in order to encourage more graduate students and/or practitioners to enter our profession.  You may write these anonymously if you wish, but the message would be stronger if your name were attached for publication.  We hope to make these available on the new IDEC website now in construction.  Send your stories to Jenni Vincent at jvincent@idec.org

DESIGN COMPETITION - YOUR STUDENTS CAN WIN $$!

AATCC has launched its fourth annual C2C®/CITDA design competition developed by its Concept 2 Consumer® Interest Group and the Computer Integrated Textile Design Association. AATCC continues to expand the competition by inviting submissions from institutions with textile design programs and those with art, interior design, and fashion merchandising programs. The aim of the competition continues to be the promotion of innovative product development.

The theme of this year’s competition is “Earth Day, Every Day,” and the contest has been divided into two main categories: Interior/Outdoor Design and Apparel Design.  Each of these main categories have been broken down further into sub-categories: Fabric Design and Product Design.

Please encourage your undergraduate and graduate students to enter the competition. They may enter as individuals or teams, to make it easier for you to include the competition as a project in your curriculum. The entry fee is waived for participants who are AATCC student members. Nonmembers pay a $30 entry fee which includes a one-year student membership.

Entries must be received on CD by November 30, 2007. Five finalists in each sub-category will be asked to submit story boards and final products for judging. Winning entries will be awarded $1,000 for First Place and $500 for Second Place, in each sub-category. In addition, the first place winner of the Apparel Design, Product Design sub-category will be invited to London for the Society of Dyers and Colourists’ (SDC) “International Colour and Textile Award” grand awards ceremony in October 2008.  Winners will be announced at AATCC’s C2C Interest Group meeting, held in conjunction with the AATCC Spring Committee Meetings in May of 2008 (finalists are not required to be present for the announcement).

Complete competition guidelines, entry forms, and student membership applications can be accessed at
www.aatcc.org.

If you have questions or need additional information about the competition, contact Suzanne Holmes; e-mail holmes@aatcc.org; telephone 919-549-3537.

If you are interested in forming an AATCC student chapter at your school, see www.aatcc.org or contact Birgit W. Patty, membership services director; email pattyb@aatcc.org; telephone 919-549-3531. Meanwhile, we look forward to receiving your students’ entries in the design competition!

Make A Difference Project

Interior design student Maria Johnson noticed that stray animals in her neighborhood drank out of mud puddles because there was no other available water. Discovering that water dishes left out for animals quickly got choked with leaf debris, she fashioned water bowls with a partial overhang design that kept the water clean for a longer period of time.

Can interior design students use creativity to make daily existence better for human beings, other living things or the earth?  See full Press Release here.

The IDEC Justice Network announces the Make a Difference Project, a small but meaningful initiative to get interior design students involved in giving back to their local communities through design.  Your students can gain national exposure by submitting their Make a Difference projects to the IDEC by November 5th.  Learn more about how to get involved by visiting http://www.idec.org/resource/special.html.
