CALL TO ACTION:

DIALOGUE ABOUT SUSTAINING THE FUTURE OF INTERIOR DESIGN EDUCATION

A rather robust roundtable discussion regarding the future of design education and the impending shortage of design educators took place in Chicago at NeoCon 2007.  Sponsored by Kimball, a packed room of educators, practitioners, and industry leaders discussed the issue at length.  Read a brief synopsis of the event, released by the IDEC Offices on June 29th by clicking here.

A companion article was written by Georgy Olivieri of GO Initiatives, detailing the story of Laura Smith of Perkins+Will/Eva Maddox Branded Environments.  Laura, one of the featured panelists in the Call to action Roundtable Discussion on the future of interior design education, will be leaving private practice and returning to school to attend the University of Michigan for the express purpose of becoming an Interior Design Educator.  Read her story here.

Make A Difference Project

Interior design student Maria Johnson noticed that stray animals in her neighborhood drank out of mud puddles because there was no other available water. Discovering that water dishes left out for animals quickly got choked with leaf debris, she fashioned water bowls with a partial overhang design that kept the water clean for a longer period of time.

Can interior design students use creativity to make daily existence better for human beings, other living things or the earth?  See full Press Release here.

The IDEC Justice Network announces the Make a Difference Project, a small but meaningful initiative to get interior design students involved in giving back to their local communities through design.  Your students can gain national exposure by submitting their Make a Difference projects to the IDEC by November 5th.  Learn more about how to get involved by visiting http://www.idec.org/resource/special.html.
