Application
1. Professional Membership
shall be open to those who are engaged as full-time Interior Design educators
(to include administration and research in this field if other qualifications
are met) in Colleges, Universities, Art Schools, Community and Junior
Colleges, and Trade and Technical Schools and Institutes offering at least
a two- (2) year program in this field. (Post high school-60 semester credit
hours or the equivalent.) Professional members shall have the following:
- Diploma, bachelor’s degree or masters
degree in Interior Design or related field from an accredited school,
college or university, or equivalency as determined by the academic
institution.
- Two years experience as a full-time Interior
Design Educator in a department offering a program in Interior Design.
Full time is defined by the academic institution concerned. Professional
Membership may also be granted according to equivalencies determined
by the IDEC Board of Directors on individual application.
- Those professional members who also practice
Interior Design professionally will be required to pass the “National
Council for Interior Design Qualifications” examination OR where
the NCIDQ examination is not applicable, be an active, professional
or registered member in good standing of a recognized professional organization
of a province, state, or country in which the practice is located. (Members
in good standing as of May 1, 1978, will not be required to meet this
requirement.)
Professional Members are entitled to all privileges. They may:
- attend all meetings and functions of IDEC,
- receive publications and mailings,
- access IDEC on-line,
- be identified on the Membership Lists as
Professional Members and use the initials IDEC,
- vote on issues,
- serve as Board Members or act in any capacity
on any committee or assigned position,
- nominate individuals for Honorary and Fellow
Membership status
2. Associate Membership
shall be open to those individuals engaged as Interior Design Educators
in Colleges, Universities, Art Schools, Community and Junior Colleges,
Trade and Technical Schools, and Institutes having at least a two-year
program (60 semester credits or the equivalent) presupposing the completion
of Secondary education or its equivalent as a condition of entrance, these
being educators not qualified for Professional Membership. Associate Membership
shall be open to part-time educators in Interior Design. Associate members
shall have the following:
- Any full-time educator, having completed
two years of Interior Design education experience, and meeting qualifications
for Professional Membership are transferred from Associate to Professional
status.
- Associate membership may also be granted according
to equivalencies determined by the IDEC Board of Directors on individual
application.
- Those Associate Members who also practice
Interior Design professionally will be required to pass the National
Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination, or registered
member in good standing of a recognized professional organization of
a province, state, or country in which the practice is located. (Members
in good standing as of May 1, 1978 will not need to meet this requirement.)
Qualifications shall be vouched for by the applicant’s department
head or equivalent.

3. Graduate Membership shall be open
to those individuals who are students enrolled in a professional post-graduate
degree program. Qualifications shall be vouched for by the applicant’s
department head or equivalent. Graduate Student members shall have the
following:
- attend all meetings and functions of IDEC unless
otherwise specifically noted,
- receive publications and mailings,
- access IDEC on-line,
- be identified on Membership Lists as Graduate Student
Members,
- serve on committees.
4. Honorary Membership
is an invitational category designed to recognize significant contributions
to interior design education by individuals not eligible to be Professional
Members. Honorary members shall have the following:
Honorary Members are entitled to all the privileges of Associate Membership.
They may:
- attend all meetings and functions of IDEC unless
otherwise specifically noted,
- receive publications and mailings,
- access IDEC on-line,
- be identified on Membership Lists as Honorary Members
- serve on committees.
5. Fellow
status is a Professional Membership category designed to honor an IDEC
member who has made an outstanding contribution to the Interior Design
Educators Council and shall be identified by the use of the initials FIDEC.
Fellows are Professional Members and entitled to all privileges thereof.
6. Educator Affiliate
Part-time/Adjuncts are the target market. This category
is intended to encourage part-time faculty to join IDEC as a means
of providing them information of teaching strategies, research opportunities,
and networking. IDEC will benefit as many of these individuals are
full-time
practitioners, which will stimulate stronger relationships and communication
between education and practice.
Educator Affiliate Members may:
- attend all meetings
and functions of IDEC unless otherwise specifically
noted,
- receive mailings and publications, except the International
Journal of Interior Design,
- access
IDEC online,
- be identified on Membership List
as Educator Affiliate
Members,
- not have voting
privileges.
7. Industry Affiliate
An Industry Affiliate member is for industry allies interested in interior
design education and the activities of IDEC. This category is intended
to strengthen and create stronger relations and communications between
education and practice. Industry Affiliate Members may:
- Attend
all meetings and function s of IDEC unless otherwise
specifically noted,
- receive publications and mailings, except the International
Journal of Interior Design,
- access IDEC online
- be identified on Membership Lists as Industry
Affiliate Members
- serve on
committees.
8. Retired Membership shall
be open to members who are officially retired from their educational
institution
or design-related practice. Retired members shall have the following
privileges:
- attend all meetings and functions of IDEC unless
otherwise noted,
- receive publications and mailings,
- access IDEC on-line,
- be identified on membership list as retired members,
- serve on committees.
9. Inactive Membership
is open to Professional Members of good standing of at least five years
who are temporarily not engaged in interior design education. An IDEC
member may choose this membership status for a maximum of two years.
At that time a new membership category needs to be selected. No filing
fee
will be assessed upon reinstatement of the previous membership category.
Inactive members shall have the following privileges:
- attend all meeting and functions of IDEC unless
otherwise specifically noted,
- be identified on membership lists as Inactive Members,
- receive
mailings, except for the Journal of Interior Design.
- Inactive Members will not have voting privileges
or access to IDEC on-line services.
