Phases of the Interior Design Process: The workflow for delivering an interior design project
Amy Roehl, September 2016
The design process can feel abstract to a young student who has not yet had the experience of moving through an entire project start to finish (i.e. programming through construction administration).

While certain aspects of the design process are modeled through studio courses (such as schematic design and design development), most interior design undergrads will likely first experience the entire design process through their post-graduation employment.

This series of videos may be used to introduce the design process to young students or be used as a refresher for more advanced students (for example, before embarking on a set of construction documents, the instructor could use the video on Construction Documentation and Construction Administration as a review).
The Poetics of Ephemeral Illumination
Mary Golden, September 2016
One of the greatest challenges in teaching lighting design is effectively imparting to students the subtle qualities of daylight that evoke poetic experiences. In particular, the sublime qualities of natural illumination all too often evade the new designer and translation of luminous, experiential effects for the interior environment fade early on in the design process.  This video short presentation provides an introduction to the terminology relevant to the ephemeral qualities of light. Terminology is  illustrated in a series of threaded still images and video sequences with voice over. Text will be brief as the visuals are intended to drive student understanding by illustrating poetic moments of illumination. The intent is to awaken the student's eye and mind to the qualities of light that exist in the world around them and in the everyday moments that are often taken for granted.  Instruction intends to convey the potential for translation of luminous ephemeral conditions into experiential occurrences for the interior environment. Potential explorations to be presented include but are not limited to:
Qualities of movement
Reflection off surfaces
Shadow play
Spontaneous bursts
Dreamlike, mystical effects
Blurring
Color spectrum
Transcendence The conclusion of the video short summarizes luminous effects and applications for the interior environment thereby promoting student ideation for potential translations. The information in the video short and learning activity is intended to support broader instruction in interior lighting design by providing a hands on methodology for exploring the effects of illumination inspired by the qualities of natural daylight.
