Future Faculty Network

The Future Faculty Network was formally established in February 2009 to open a dialogue among current graduate students and recently appointed faculty members regarding the transition from student to teacher. The network serves as a support group and resource for issues common to graduate students and new faculty: research (including thesis work), scholarship, and teaching. It also aims to attract and retain new IDEC members by informing graduate students of the benefits of membership and collaboration within IDEC.

Network Chair: Lindsay Clark

2008 Membership Survey Results

In the summer of 2008, IDEC’s Board of Directors surveyed its membership to better understand the profile of its growing membership. Approximately 30% of the membership completed the survey. Less than 5% of respondents were from Canada, making the results of this survey more indicative of members in the United States. We hope to continue our efforts in learning about our membership through future surveys.

Creative Scholarship White Paper

A position paper “The Value of Including Creative Endeavors in the Tenure and Promotion Process” has been posted to the IDEC website.

This position paper was written to clarify the value of including creative scholarship in the tenure and promotion process; define the terms used for labeling creative scholarship; and provide criteria and methods for evaluating the significance of scholarly work in creative fields.

The thesis adopted in the paper is as follows: All research is creative and thereby a process leading to the discovery of new knowledge; therefore, applying hierarchy to different forms of scholarship should be discouraged. Increasing awareness and appreciation for creative endeavors is essential. This paper serves to assist institutions in evaluating and giving due credit to those faculty who engage in this important and timely work. Diverse forms of scholarship enrich the academy and assist programs, colleges, universities and institutions in supporting their missions.

There is a plan to revisit this topic every two years by an IDEC task force which will seek to continue to further define and clarify this form of scholarship and strengthen the support for assessment, validation, and recognition of scholarly creative work.

Proposed Changes to Bylaws to be Voted on at the 2009 Annual Conference

It is time once again to consider the amendments to the IDEC Bylaws that were proposed by IDEC members during the November 2008-January 2009 call for Bylaws changes. The discussion and vote on these changes will occur at the business meeting on Saturday, March 28th at the Annual Conference in St. Louis. Below is a link to the proposal for your review. If you would like further context, the current IDEC Bylaws can be accessed on the IDEC website under “IDEC Member Center”.

Council for Interior Design Accreditation Board Elects Officers, Appoints New Directors

The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) Board of Directors elected Cary Johnson, FIIDA, as Board Chair. Johnson is Midwest Regional Workplace Leader at Gensler, Chicago. Heather Robertson Corrigan, FIDC, Principal of Robertson MacLean Design Limited, was elected 2009 Secretary Treasurer, as well as being reappointed to the CIDA Board for a three-year term.

One new appointment was made to the nine-member CIDA Board. Carl Matthews was appointed as liaison to the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC). Matthews is currently an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Matthews' breadth and depth of experience as an interior design educator and practitioner in such firms as HOK, Gensler, and Callison Partnership brings a wealth of knowledge to the CIDA Board.
