IDEC Membership Renewal Approaches

IDEC Membership Renewal begins November 1. In keeping with our environmental goals, renewal notices will be sent by email this year.

Don't forget there are two ways to be a member of IDEC - as an individual member or by gathering your colleagues and renewing through an Institutional Group Package.

Creating an Institutional Group Package is only available during the renewal period so take a moment to learn the benefits and qualifications of this renewal option. Quite possibly you can save money over individual memberships while increasing the participation and communication among your staff. If you have questions about this option, contact the IDEC office.

Watch for your notice to renew or go online after November 1 so you retain your valuable member benefits.

Board Election Deadline is October 29

An email survey ballot was sent to all voting members on October 4 with the final slate of candidates for 2011-2012 leadership as approved by the Nominating Committee.

The proposed slate of officers for the IDEC Board of Directors 2011 is available on the IDEC website. Both the position descriptions and biographies for the slated officers are posted in the member center.

IDEC is fortunate and proud to have very qualified and committed individuals who are dedicated to the mission of IDEC and ready to serve its members.

The survey was uniquely tied to your email address. If you need that message resent, please contact Lauren Gardier in the IDEC office.

IDEC Annual Conference News

IDEC Annual Conference

March 16-19, 2011, Denver, CO

The IDEC Annual Conference will focus on Educators as Intentional Leaders within the conference theme of Design with Intelligence. Three related conference events will build on the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers’ (IFI) Think Tanks, which are the foundation of their international initiative: Design Frontiers: Interiors Entity. IFI is hosting nearly 50 Think Tanks around the world to have participants address the interior design profession’s:

  • Identity

  • Relevance

  • Value

  • Responsibility

The outcome of the Think Tanks is a series of White Papers from each region in the world. These White Papers will be the basis of a global IFI Summit to be held early in 2011, where recommendations will be made for moving the discipline forward.

At the 2011 IDEC Annual Conference, a three-part series of events provide IDEC members with an opportunity to tackle these recommendations and become intentional leaders.

  • Part 1. Shashi Caan, IFI President, will present the IFI Summit Recommendations at the Kick-Off event, Wednesday evening, March 16.

  • Part 2. Valerie Fletcher, Executive Director of the Institute for Human Centered Design, will present leadership intelligence at the Keynote event to bridge participants between the Recommendations and development of Strategies, Thursday, March 17.

  • Part 3. All Conferece Participants, will develop leadership strategies to implement the IFI Recommendations as intentional leaders in our institutions and design communities, at the Fellows Action Forum, Friday, March 18,

This is IDEC’s opportunity to lead the effort to “reposition the Interiors discipline on the world stage” (Shashi Caan, IFI President).

Teaching Resources Survey

IDEC is currently considering the creation of a resource for interior design educators that would make available interior design teaching materials for purchase. These materials would be assembled through calls for submittals from IDEC members, thus giving everyone the ability to share successful ideas and move our collective mission of excellence forward. Submissions would be double-blind peer reviewed, and accepted authors would be provided an honorarium for their work. The work would remain the property of the author, who also assumes all liability for copyright and other legal issues. The resource will be published and available for purchase on line so color, graphics, and innovation will be included.

This survey will help IDEC determine the degree of interest in this initiative for IDEC members to purchase projects and to submit projects for review and potential acceptance.  It will take less than 10 minutes to complete this. Please respond by Friday, October 15.

Please use the following link to take the survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/IDECTRIsurvey

For the purpose of this survey, assume that this initiative would offer for sale interior design projects (suitable for studio or non-studio courses) in topic areas that you currently teach.

A project package for sale would include the following components:

  • Learning goals and objectives, including how these relate to CIDA accreditation standards
  • Project description
  • Teaching materials such as visual presentations
  • Related handouts
  • Description of support readings for students (source and page
  •    numbers)
  • Grading rubrics and/or grade sheet
  • Past student outcomes with the project
  • Bibliography
  • Permission for buyer to use material granted from author

Staying Connected with IDEC

Are you receiving IDEC emails and mailings?

Update your contact information online.

Log in to the Member Center at www.idec.org, and follow the link, Update Your Contact Information. From here, you can ensure your mail and email addresses are current.

Add a second, personal email address.

While updating your contact information in the online Membership Directory, add a personal email address in the field Non-.edu Email Address. As we have noticed, many emails are being blocked by institutions. This option will be more reliable long-term than an institutional address.

Add the IDEC domain to your safe senders list.

  • For each email program you use, add @idec.org, @constantcontact.com and @surveymonkey.com to your Safe Senders list.
  • For example: In Outlook, follow the Actions tab to Junk E-mail, to Junk E-mail options. From the Safe Senders tab, add domains @idec.org, @constantcontact.com and @surveymonkey.com.
  • If you have a different email program, feel free to email lgardier@idec.org for assistance.
